Special Education Services for Students with Disabilities

It is the policy of the Board of Education of Wicomico County (WCBOE) to provide a full continuum of specialized instruction and health related services for all eligible students with disabilities, birth through age 20, who reside in Wicomico County, to ensure their right to a free, appropriate public education. This also includes identification of students with disabilities attending private schools, due to the nature of the disability and who are in need of special education and related services. To the extent appropriate, students with disabilities will be educated in the least restrictive environment with age appropriate, non-disabled students. Removal of students with disabilities from the regular educational environment occurs only when the nature of severity of the disability is such that education in general education classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily and is the decision of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. Such removal will comply with all applicable regulations. The Board authorizes the Superintendent of Schools to develop and implement regulations and procedures to accomplish these objectives.
