Educational Programs

Essential thinking skills are developed through academic units of study. These units of study provide opportunities for the students to develop proficiency in concepts and skills of the regular curriculum while also providing content, instructional strategies and settings for learning that may be unique for gifted students. Qualified students meet for a 2-hour class period, once every six-day cycle in groups of three to no more than ten students with an itinerant T.A.D. teacher. There are four TAD teachers at the elementary level that travel throughout the county to the following schools to provide instruction: North Salisbury, Northwestern, Westside Intermediate, Pemberton, Prince Street, Glen Avenue, East Salisbury, Fruitland Intermediate, Willards/Pittsville, and Delmar Elementary. The home school for the elementary TAD teachers is North Salisbury. Salisbury Middle serves as the home school for one middle school TAD teacher and Bennett Middle serves as the other. There are two TAD teachers at the middle school level that travel to the following schools to provide TAD instruction: Bennett Middle, Salisbury Middle, Wicomico Middle, Mardela Middle/High School, and Pittsville. The chart below indicates an approximate number of students who are enrolled in the TAD program for the current school year. Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 30 41 39 42 40 44 At the elementary level, the TAD teachers also offer Enrichment classes for students who were close to qualifying for the program. This class is separate from TAD class and the students meet for one hour, once out of every six-day cycle. The program is very similar to the TAD program in terms of structure and expectations. The purpose of Choices Academy is to help meet the needs of a diverse student population as they continue to work toward graduation through a variety of pathways. See figure 3 for the available pathways.
